As of November 2006, the Health Professions Act enabled dental hygienists in Alberta to provide services separate from a traditional dental hygiene office. This provides the public with the opportunity to choose the dental hygienist of their choice while keeping professional contact with his/her current dentist.
Dental hygiene is a regulated profession governed by the College of Registered Dental Hygienists of Alberta. The College maintains that all professional standards and infection control requirements are met to ensure the public receives safe and effective oral health care. The services provided by registered dental hygienists in an independent clinic are the same services they can provide in a traditional dental hygiene office.
